EXERCISE TESTING FOR VO2 MAX

Resting Metabolic Rate Analysis

At Newport Men's HRT, we offer Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) analysis using special equipment that measurement how much food (energy) is required to maintain basic body functions such as heartbeat, breathing, and maintenance of body heat while at rest. That energy is expressed in calories per day.  An RMR test using this highly sensitive equipment accurately shows how many calories you burn at rest, as opposed to using a generic formula that can be notoriously inaccurate.  Once you understand your true metabolic needs, you can appropriately plan and adjust your nutrition and exercise program to meet your goals for improving your body composition.  Follow up testing can also be done to monitor your response to exercise, diet and hormone therapy.  Click here to learn more.

VO2 Max Testing with CardioCoach

We proudly offer state of the art VO2 Max testing with KORR Technologies CardioCoach Analyzer and a LODE cycle ergometry. KORR Technologies Inc. is an internationally recognized leader in the field of CardioPulmonary Exercise Test technology and their equipment is utilized by top athletic trainers and exercise physiologists throughout the world. A VO2 Max Test is an exercise test performed on a cycle or treadmill that tests a person’s ability to perform sustained exercise. It takes about 10 - 15 minutes to complete and requires increasing intensity to maximal effort. It is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. Equally important, the test will determine a person's Aerobic Threshold (AeT) which defines the minimal level of effort that can produce improvement in cardiovascular fitness. If you are not meeting your Aerobic Threshold with exercise then you are "undertraining" and likely not improving your fitness level or athletic potential. The VO2 Max test will also assess the Anaerobic Threshold (AT) which marks the level of intensity at which lactic acid is building up faster than you can clear, and this would then mean you are "overtraining". Athletes who overtrain can experience decline in their performance and increase the risk of injuries.  Click here to learn more.

VO2 Max and Aging

VO2 Max is known to decrease with age so testing is commonly used in Anti-Aging Medicine to track response to diet, exercise and hormone replacement. Research in males has demonstrated an approximate 9% decrease in VO2 Max every decade of life beginning at the age of 30. Hormonal deficiencies can have a significant impact on VO2 max, hence aerobic capacity. In particular Growth Hormone deficiency in adults is highly associated with decreased cardiac output and hence decreased VO2 Max. Studies have shown that replacement therapy with HGH can have a profound effect on cardiovascular fitness and VO2 Max capacity.  Studies have also shown that previously sedentary people training at 75% of aerobic power for 30 minutes, 3-times per week over 6 months increase VO2 Max an average of 15-20%. Periodic retesting provides motivating feedback as the fitness program progresses.  The CardioCoach device is also  supported by an iPhone App that can be used to track and adjust your training.  Click here for more.
